So I’m moving back to Tennessee. In the week since my family and I reached this decision, I’ve put a lot of thought into things that I missed and would be glad to be around again. So much thought that I decided to try to compile a list!
Here’s what I came up with at work.
- My friends
- Family members that didn’t come to Hawaii (ie. dad & family, sister & family)
- This guy:
Grendel is the best cat ever. I’m grateful for Toby and Elizabeth taking care of him for me, but damn do I miss him.
Those were the easy and obvious ones.
- Cosmos Wings
- Thursday nights at Thomas Andrews
- Bars in general (obviously there are bars here, but I have no group to go with)
- Pen and paper RPGs
- Board games. My family likes board games too so I haven’t been completely deprived, but it’s a different type of game. I’m looking at you, Betrayal at House on the Hill.
- Multiplayer video games. The internet should make this easy, but a 5-hour time difference between myself and most everyone I know complicates it immensely.
Those were all still pretty easy. But then things hit me that I didn’t even realize I’d missed until I thought about coming back.
- Weather. Thunderstorms, yeah, but also just the uncertainty that just because it was X yesterday doesn’t mean it’ll be X today. In Kihei it’s sometimes cloudy, occasionally a little rainy, super rarely stormy, and with highs in the 80s and lows in the high 60s. That sounds pretty sweet, but it’s kinda boring after a while.
- Nerdiness in general. I don’t have anyone to geek out to here, doing it through text just isn’t the same and I’ve never been much of a phone talker. Having people to talk to about video games and comic books is awesome, if you didn’t know.
- Staples crew gossip. Whatever, I know, but I miss it. I don’t know what Brittany’s been doing that I can knowingly go “Oh, Brittany, no.” to, or how often Tracy comes into work high out of his mind anymore.
I never thought I’d grown so attached to Tennessee, but I guess I’ve gone and proved myself wrong.
